I taught myself Sign Language years ago. I also dabbled in Chinese, Japanese, Korean (watched some Netflix shows in the last language lol), not to mention Spanish. But I love words & am fascinated by languages & cultures. Don't care to be fluent; just helps us learn & hence grow in being a human being.

I took a couple of years of Spanish between high school and college, but it never really stuck. French on the other hand, I took quite a few years of that through both high school and college. I don't use it on the daily, though, so I don't remember as much as I used to. It is something I've thought about getting back into learning and using though. I'd also love to learn ASL more, I know some things here and there, but I'm far from fluent.

I find it hard to learn other languages in their entirety. Nouns and some small phrases are all I seem to be able to get. Would like to learn more Spanish but when I look at all the different verb tenses, etc. it becomes overwhelming and I just don't want to get into it. I suppose if I lived somewhere where we spoke it quite frequently I would eventually learn it, but that would probably go for any language. It amazes me when I hear that someone can speak 5, 6, 8 different languages.

Whatever country I have visited, the first thing I wanted to learn in that language was "thank you". You will get rewarded with a big smile if you show you care.
I speak German and English, and used to speak Italian quite well, but forgot a lot, because I have had no opportunity to speak it in a long time. But whenever I hear someone speak Italian, things come back to me.

I speak English and Sinhala from my native Sri Lanka. I can also do some passable Spanish.

Many, many years ago in high school I took French & German. My granddaughter's taught me some Spanish & my grandson taught me some Latin.
